The Leepart family arrived in Fort McMurray in 1972. Gwen, raising four daughters, volunteered with many school committees as well as the Northwinds Marching Band, supporting all organizations whenever possible. Supporting her children’s activities was paramount while they were growing up.
From 1996 to 2000, Gwen was President of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), and served on the CMHA Provincial Board during that time. CMHA, an integral part of the community, offered classes and support for the residents of the community and continues to do so. Much of Gwen’s time was spent fundraising to support the continuation of the organization, including bingos and other events.
As part of the Keyano College Students Association from 1984 to 2012, Gwen supported students and was there for them in any capacity she was able to before, during, and after work hours.
An incredibly active board and committee member, and community volunteer, Gwen has received the Distinguished Service Award from Keyano College and the Ambassador of the Year Award from the Huskies Booster Club.
Gwen gives of her time in so many different ways, preparing income tax returns for students at no charge, raising funds for the United Way and the Canadian Cancer Society, opening a second-hand bookstore which provided next-to-new textbooks as well as employment opportunities for students, and so much more. Simply put, Gwen dedicates herself to making life easier for others.
