“First is spending time with family, and then enjoy the community things that there is to do, including helping where we can.”

– Steve Kean when asked what’s on his to-do list for the next 12 months.

For 22 years Steve Kean has called Wood Buffalo home. He knew when he moved here that he wanted to work with large mining equipment, and followed his career path through roles with Shell, SMS Equipment, and now as an Application Specialist with Finning.

“I have always enjoyed big equipment and all through my life I have worked around it,” Steve shares. “I keep doing it because I enjoy the new equipment and technology, and interacting with others.”

Husband to Jamie Lynn, and father to 13-year-old Xaiver and seven-year-old Jaxon, Steve spends his free time snowmobiling, camping, and biking. “I love the outdoors and spending time on the quading trails, and in the winter time, we spend lots of time on the Snow Drifters’ trails,” he shares.

Steve’s passions are his family, and helping out where he can, and helping out is something he’s no stranger to. An integral part of saving the Fort McMurray Heritage Village during this year’s flood, Steve spent countless hours pitching in to save the community’s history.

“It’s been a hard year for Fort McMurray,” he says, “but it has taught me that as a community we can get through anything. We are stronger as a community.”

For Steve, success is getting through things and moving forward no matter what the outcome is.

“You will learn how to deal with it as it comes,” he says.
