Class of 2022

Dave Stirling is the founder of Beyond Adventures and Sales, and also works as a firefighter and primary care paramedic with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

Described as loyal, adventurous, and a mentor, Dave recently sat down with YMM and chatted about his life as one of this year’s Top 50 Under 50.

YMM: What accomplishment are you most proud of?

DS: Starting and growing a business during the pandemic. It wasn’t the best timing as a first responder overall, but it taught me that I could do anything I set my mind to. I want to grow this business and provide my son with the opportunity to experience this region the way it was first discovered, from the water.

YMM: How have your priorities changed in the last 10 years?

DS: Ten years ago moving here, I had a five-year plan. The longer I stayed here the more this became home. With the opportunities to explore the region, I had the chance to start an adventure tourism business to help others explore the region. This has changed priorities from coming to just make money, to now growing roots, starting a family and investing time into the community

YMM: Describe your perfect day in YMM.

DS: Grabbing a coffee from Wood Buffalo Coffee Company, getting on the river when the fog is just lifting on a cool crisp morning, steam from the coffee rising with the fog. Setting off down the Clearwater with the family, the ripples of the water pushing out from the boat, the drip from the paddle creating its own song. Finishing the paddle at the Snye, then setting off for a walk through Birchwood Trails with the four-legged fur babies.

YMM: What motivates you?

DS: There isn’t a what that motivates me, more of a who. That is my son. Seeing the world through his eyes, his fervour for life and how he explores the world has encouraged me to reconnect with my passion for the outdoors. To create an environment where he can get outside and explore, push limits, experience risk and live a joyful and full life.

YMM: For what are you most grateful?

DS: That I was able to combine paid work with a passion. This has allowed me to provide for my family while engaging in an area that I love.
