YMM: In your opinion, in what areas does Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo need improvement?
TP: We need more pedestrian accessibility. Bike lanes, more crosswalks, and better maintenance on maintaining sidewalks during the winter months to keep folks active.
YMM: What does community mean to you?
TP: Community is your support system that comes together with common interests and like-minded goals for the betterment of all involved in your circle.
YMM: Who is your hero, and why?
TP: I would have to say, my Grandmother. I spent the vast majority of my childhood and into most of my 20s with her. Over those years, I watched her raise 10 children, along with her many grandchildren. The woman never stopped. Whether it was cooking, cleaning, working at the hospital, sewing someone’s clothing, making quilts, or knitting socks. She was always go-go-go. It wasn’t until my later years that I saw her go to bed! At no time can I ever remember her complaining about ALL the things on her plate. She just did it. Things had to get done, and she got them done. My grandmother could not read or write. However, her intelligence far surpassed anything that I have yet to learn in a book. It was her that taught me that not all conversations have words.
YMM: How have your priorities changed in the last 10 years?
TP: In the last 10 years, I’ve had 3 children, and I have gone from living for myself to living for them! My decisions are no longer based on the outcome of how it will affect my life but on how it will affect their lives.
YMM: How should success be measured?
TP: Success should be measured by what’s important to you, what your values are, and the goals you set for yourself.
