On March 27, 2023, my whole life changed as that was the day I gave birth to my son, Robert James Benjamin – aka Baby Bobby! Up to that point, I was not a mother and like all the mothers who came before me, life was completely altered in every way possible.
I have certainly acted in “mother” roles before Bobby, and am proud to say I have an amazing 8-year old step-son, Murphy, who is a complete joy and I love having him in my life. I also was blessed to have two amazing people who I was a part of raising in Madison and Jayden from my previous marriage who I’m so proud of.
But I have to say, giving birth to my own flesh and blood, a tiny human who I’d conceived and then grew inside me for almost eight months, was an entirely new and incredible thing. It is still changing me every day. So for this edition of YMM Parent, I have decided I am going to give some of my real life experiences and share some of the past year with you all – our amazing readers. Read more of my “real talk” following this letter. I’m not sure if I’ll keep it up for future editions or online content, but for now at least I felt like sharing some of my journey with you. Motherhood has been a hard (and joyous) journey for me, and if I can help share insights with even one person who is having a hard time too, I’m grateful for that.
When we began YMM Parent almost eight years ago now, it was with the hope to share with the families and parents of our incredible region. I’ve loved getting the advice and reading the articles submitted by our contributors and am grateful for the opportunity to be part of the wider parent community of Fort McMurray. I’m now hoping to share even more of my personal parenting journey with you and hope to learn and engage with you all as I go through all the ups and downs of parenthood.
As we have for the past few years, this year we are bringing to you again 20 amazing youth in our region in our “Top 20 Under 20” program that is in partnership with the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Youth (MACOY) and we are grateful for once again to have the support of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority. Congratulations to each of the amazing young people making an extraordinary contribution to our communities.
This special format of YMM holds a special place in our team’s hearts as we feel its a practical piece of literary contribution that we hope you find informative as well as uplifting as you raise your children in our region.
Have an amazing school year and stop to enjoy the memories as they are being made.
