Spell it Right: FMPSD Students Shine in National Spelling Bee

Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) students understand the definition of success and its correct spelling.

The annual National Spelling Bee of Canada was held this past weekend. Participants were designated regional representatives and sorted into participant categories according to their age.

Congratulations to Ayan Ahmed, from Fort McMurray Islamic School, who won his category for students ages 6 to 8 (Primary) at the national level. Ayan wasn’t the only FMPSD student attending however, fellow Fort McMurray Islamic School student Hiba Ali was also able to secure a top 6 finish in her age group of 12-14 (Intermediate).

Ayan and Hiba succeeded in the regional Wood Buffalo Spelling Bee, hosted earlier this year, finishing 1st in their respective categories; this success ultimately qualified them for the National Spelling Bee of Canada.

The competition brought together some of Canada’s best young spellers, so it was no easy feat for Ayan and Hiba to come out on top. They had to compete in challenging rounds, which saw them spelling words that would leave most adults stumbling. However, they showed remarkable mastery of English, accurately spelling all the words thrown their way easily.
